I should know better than to listen to Chekhov's audiobooks before sleep. Even though he wrote entertaining funny stories, he also was a realist, fully aware of the 'dark side' of existence. I forgot just how realistic he was at times and only thought, 'hey, he's not Dostoyevskiy, so this should be fine'. And it was, up until the time the author started talking about shot birds dying slowly and crying, or worse:
Imagine listening to that at night before sleep, in the dark room. At night, all the negative, worrying, depressing thoughts and emotions seem to be hightened as they are, and the last thing you want to enter your mind is more reminders of everlasting gratuitous suffering of innocent beings.
When will they start rating books like they do with books? "Some readers may find the following passage disturbing. The next passage contains depictions of animal cruelty and stuffering."But hey, I myself didn't do that just now when I've quoted the thing )). Hoping most people who find themselves in this remote corner of the web get the idea it's not a blog about rainbows and ice-cream.
I need some dull, relaxing reading. My brain is on fire as it is.
More stuff like this little story by Chekhov called "Letter To the Scientist Neighbor" (aka "Letter to a Learned Neighbor") Here's an excerpt:
Remind you of some people arguing level? :P Does to me.
Anyway, I'm off to downloading some North mythology or some other fairy-tales for knocking my noisy brain out at nights. Next will be Pepa Pig books, haha)))
In a slightly related matter, a new episode of 'Tales of Mere Existence'

:) hey I'm just popping in. Not sure for how long... All I know about Pascal is his "Pascal's Wager" that theist people love))) Anything else you've found in his works that you liked? |

Also, I don't sleep well, so I started meditating at night a couple years ago. Simply focus on your breathing "in and out and in and out" over and over again.
It's quite relaxing |

Hi Brian, Oh I've tried that the other day. ) So boring! This mad horse of a brain won't get duped by that! I wish!)) I listed to this guided meditation one night and it really helped. But the next night it didn't, haha, guess because it was already known to me and so .... boring. What does seem to help best is some silly comedy type video clips. And massage. Wow, I am liking the effects of that, been to 6 sessions so far, and I can feel I am more relaxed than before. Although I am apparently a touch case for them poor masseuse girls, muscles are too strained they say. But getting better. |

Privyet Irina,
Pascal was a very pessimistic philosopher about the human condition, which is part of the reason he turned to Christianity Yeah, meditation is tough. It takes practice. The mind is always wandering. Guided ocean meditations are a favorite of mine How is life? Are you going on any trips soon? I'm going to my brothers wedding in Southern Brazil in January...saving my dollars for that |

You little sneaky so-and-so! Were you ever going to let me know that you had posted here again? Just say I'd never come back of my own volition, what would you have done then? Yeah, you're trembling at the mere thought, ain't ya? And with good reason - I'd be shaking too at the idea of me never seeing one of my replies again. You're one lucky lady!
I don't know what's more depressing: 1. The content of your blog entry. 2. The fact that you've had to wait a full 23 days with only Brian's responses to keep you entertained. Who am I kidding, obviously it's the latter. Try to look on the bright side... at least Kirk hasn't written anything yet. See? Don't you love how I can always put things into proper perspective? Rinkiness, I realise your time is being taken up with non-internetish things now and won't be staying long, but it pleases me to see that you haven't totally forgotten your roots and are keeping the site (almost) alive. It also gives me a legitimate excuse to write to you outside of birthday time.)))) You know I wish you well and hope you're happy. Take care. ... especially while driving. |

Hey D O'B! Was thinking you've forgotten all about this blog) seeing how it was technically abandoned for a year, I wouldn't expect many people to stick around anyway. Appreciate you making me chuckle, even though at Kirk's expense)) I'm always glad to hear from you. |

Was wondering how you were and if you would ever come back - glad to see you have. Hope you've been doing well.
I can relate much to depressing emotions being heightened at night. Being a night owl doesn't help either. Best thing for me is to simply expend a lot of energy during the day so it's easier to fall asleep to a movie or some relaxing music. Oh well, it's not as if we're heading into Autumn/Winter where the days are shorter and nights longer... Take care. Aaron |

Think I remember you too, Aaron! Glad to hear back from you as well.) Yep, started falling asleep to movies and such, and it is much better. On worst days I'd sleep with movie on pause with remote close just in case I wake up during the night and remember some disturbing thoughts, so I can put myself back to sleep with some distracting movie. I used to work at nights, but trying to keep myself to 'normal' schedule and avoid overworking, which is easy for me bc work is from home and I've been abusing that, but following doctors advice trying to be more gentle with my nervous system, have a regiment, cut down on coffee etc. All those old people habits, right?)) Well, still no nap time for me though, haha. |

Wasn't expecting you to remember at all, so that's a pleasant surprise Still got that Confessions of an Antinatalist?
Only problem with movies is you still have to limit yourself to what you watch, especially if your favourite are the kind with heavy subject matter or which get you thinking, not just shoving popcorn in your mouth! Haha, sounds like keeping good sleep hygiene which I'm all too aware of. Don't sleep in, get out during the day, don't use your phone/computer at night... All the fun stuff Cool that you're still able to work from home. |

Well, remember vaguely, of course, I'm a vain pretty woman, of course, most of my brain is naturally allocated for makeup and instagram selfies Yes, still got the book, thank you! Dumb movies are the best for nighttime soothing. I actually love me some scary movies, give me some haunted house or murderous doll and I'm happy))) Work from home is great, but often too tempting to keep on working till it's time to sleep, which is bad sleep hygiene, as I now realize. So trying to leave work few hours before sleep as most people would normally do. Or at least only do some very easy tasks at night, not try to write a piece of code and than see it in my dreams, as has happened a few times. I'm studying for another profession that'd require me to get out of the house, but only as much as I want to, always trying to be my own boss and as independent as possible. Being a complete hermit is tiring as well sometimes. Still searching for that balance of just enough interaction with people) How have you been? |

Scary movies... night time soothing?! Not nightmare soothing?!
Glad to hear things seem to be working out. Good luck with your new profession whatever that may be! I'm also looking to start training for new work, as a massage therapist. Usual ups and downs otherwise; achieved some personal goals and got quite lucky financially, but yes, being a hermit (especially with these kind of unpopular views) can still be just as tiring and lonely. |

Yep, fake nightmare movies take my attention away from real-life ones. What's also working are some good movies seen a while ago: know they're good, know what's in them, safe. Funny that, we're both training for new work in the similar kind of setting))) Mine also envolves a massage table. Also, been getting massages myself not long ago, very helpful, not just for the body but for the mental state. Some girls are even fun to chat with, an additional bonus. Hey, lucky financially is lucky, still better to be miserable and able to afford most money can buy than miserable and pressed for funds. Good luck with your studies! |

I'm reading a great book on Blaise Pascal...the great French Catholic scientist and philosopher
