16-08-2016 Hi Irina. Good writing. That's basically how i see it too. Though some may argue, if, at the end of the day, nothing really matters (in an absolute sense) why should i do anything at all? Well, true, that kind of dopamine-and-other-chemical-shit-cycle that keeps us running is kind silly, but what you gonna do..our fucking brains wants us to do shit. And if don't, you'll be punished by our loving mother nature: lethargy, boredom, depression... But that doesn't mean that I would advice to take that fetch-game of life overly serious too, especially if things aren't going your way. Ah yes, and developing a high frustration tolerance and to be able to genuinely give a fuck about things, is useful too (Some might find Stoicism helpful here).About self-acceptance: Well it's certainly true, that bad parents can fuck one up. But I don't thinkk just because someone is a self-hating miserable fuck, it can always (or even most of the time) be blamed on the parents. I mean people got brainwashed with all sorts of nutty cultural and communal narratives and unrealistic expectations: How they must be, to be an acceptable 'good' person. And if they aren't and can't conform to them, their life is failure and their are a total loser..And also the religious ones: True, many (at least in the western world) don't believe in god, and don't think that he as any explanatory value. But religious-style thinking is very much alive and kicking, even without god. The way I see it, especially the monotheistic religions are suffering-obsessed, deeply life-hating and misanthropic with a twisted guilt-culture (Though they try to cover it up with holiness and nice-sounding words). They fabricated compulsive ideals, how people and the world must be and conform to, to be considered 'good'. So I think the whole religious memeplex (and all its pathologies) is still driving the secular world (just without god). Whether someone is pessimist, a compulsive do-gooder and utopist, or a defiant selfish cynical asshole. Just different extreme reactions to the same dysfunctional memplex. So I think it’s also important to be able to see through this dysfunctional bullshit we got brainwashed with, to be less of an slave and stand on ones own feed. |

17-08-2016 Dear Irina,Thank you for your reply. Yes, if there is no distraction or delusion time for us,humans, become very heavy. Who wants to confront the truth? It is too much. But I envy people who can go on as you can sweep ugly things under the carpet. Stay safe in Ukraine. RaГєl |

Well, I am able to do fine under rather comfortable conditions. Swep that rug from under my feet and I'm pathetic wimp )) So far so good... some day won't be so but for now relatively comfortable. Sending you a hug! |

20-08-2016 Dear Irina,Thank you for taking the time to read my answer. I wish there were more ladies who are willing to speak the truth. Although we are living in a different epoch, a woman like you with such way of thinking would have been burned at a stake for consorting with the "devil". Of course now there is a modern way of execution. Please stay safe there. RaГєl |

21-08-2016 Irina,Have you ever heard of "St. John's Wort?" It's supposed to help with depression. I've been feeling a bit down lately. Maybe I'll try it |
|
22-08-2016 Irina,Never mind about St. John's Wort. I found something better It's called "Mindfulness" and it's about living in the moment, not the past or the future. It's scientifically proven to help change brain chemistry. Have you heard of it? |

I have, but never read about it on purpose. Whatever works for you. I guess if your present sucks though it won't help much, eh? Then gotta live in the future hoping it won\t suck so much then, or in past - remembering some good times. I'm going on vacation soon, won't hear much from me till september at least. |

23-08-2016 Dear Irina,I hope you enjoy your holidays wherever you go. I could not finish my my other comment because of the slow Internet. I meant to say that in this mad world there is more pressure on women than on men. We come to a very unjust world. I wonder why this sudden change from nothingness into existence. What is all the human suffering for? I will be waiting for your posts after you come back. Greetings. RaГєl |

11-09-2016 Irina, How is one of my favorite AN sisters doing? I agree with your post, the only thing I might add is that most people will move between, or into, both states, that is, not chronic to chronic, etc. Ultimately, as you know, the trend is toward dying So the chronic suffering will getcha unless you have a quick and early death, and not everyone is so fortunate. There was a story of a woman who had the first face transplant dying of cancer, which the anti-rejection drugs for the transplant set her up for. What I hadn't known is that her face was mauled by her dog while she was trying to OD on drugs to commit suicide. So a failed suicide with drastic consequences, and an extremely slow and troublesome early death instead. My heart goes out to this woman, and the lack of access to being able to be treated at least as well as a dog or cat and be quietly put down is denied to most people, which just makes life and the two states that much harder. Since I can't find where you take email (completely understandable), I am just using your latest post to do it, instead Anyway, I vacationed in Britain for the first time, can let you know what I thought later, but if you have any small interest in psychology and this latest authoritarianism present in the US election and Trump's buddying up to Putin, I found this short video to have a good basic review of the dynamics behind the people that support his candidacy, or any strong man type leader. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YU9djt_CQM |

Hey Kirk, Long time no read :D Just got back from holiday, Croatia. Was great. When you are on that beach on that tan bed, listening to your music, not many people around - you don't think of any pain (well, hopefully, most of the time). Just being in the moment enjoying the sun and the calm sea wanter that just lifts you up. There's no reason to bypass such moments and fill them up with memories of horror stories (events) of the past or future. No reason to fuck up THE TODAY if it's not too bad. Especially if you know that most likely shit is gonna chase you up in the future, most people suffer in old age, chronically as you say. Even more reason to enjoy the least horrible moments while you still can. Oh, Trump and Putin. What times we're living in! I get the video but I think a lot of people are into Trump not for the strong leadership but for the political incorrectness, it's been and still is such a 1984 going on with words policing and safe spaces and entitled cry-babies everywhere. People get tired of that. Although I don't believe Trump actually means anything he so passionately proclaims some people do I suppose. Thankfully, it's not raving in Ukraine and we can call people fat when they're fat or call women ugly when they are and not have a shitstorm gather over such expressions. |

15-09-2016 @Kirk I think the new trends towards authoritarianism and nationalism is also partly due to a crisis in meaning (https://meaningness.com/metablog/communal-vs-systematic-politics). Furthermore people seem to get more fearful and angry for a variety of reasons, so they reside in tribalism and nationalism to find security, running after 'strong' leaders, who promise them to bring back the good old times where things all right (which actually never existed: https://aeon.co/essays/nostalgia-exerts-a-strong-allure-and-extracts-a-steep-price). And yes, self-satisfied leftist arrogance of parts of the upper-middle class who are well-educated and are financially and socially well off isn't very helpful too.@Irina True, there are many oversensitive special snowflakes and narcissistic professional victims (SJWs, PC-Trolls...) around. But that doesn't mean that there are really that many people who take them seriously. SJWs find their supporters mainly in the younger generation who a still quite naive, lack of certain psychological maturity and need vessel for their do-good-impulses (means self righteous finger pointing). But sooner or later most of the will grow out of that, though some are indeed hopeless cases. But whats also true is that some really want to have a free pass for being an jerk and asshole a la: Ohh just because I said that Arabs are rapists and refugees should be gassed that bad leftist said i am a horrible person *snif* oooh that damn political correctness..... I am not against challenging racism, misogyny and so on when its justified. Though I lean clearly towards the left, some of them really lost touch with reality and live in an idealistic fantasy world. Some can't just accept people as they are, cant differ more or less harmless prejudices due to the lack experience and understanding, from serious bad intentions. Even then, thought-policing and censorship (which also became popular among left-wingers) probably only make things worse. |

Just listen to George Carlin talking about 'soft language', was like 10 years ago, and the trend seems to continue. |

15-09-2016 Lol, yes but that's more that people trying to be nice (or are misguided attempts of politeness, people bullshitting each other). Thats more like not being allowed to swear in public. But I also think that all this talk about being 'oppressed' by political correctness pretty hippocritical too. I mean come on, people can and actually do say all sorts 'offensive' things all the time - misguided overzealous crazy sjws have not stopped people doing so. I just start worrying, when they want to institutionalize such correctness by law and censorship.quote:

PC is pretty rampant and not a discussion goes by without conversation stoppers being thrown at those who want to criticize some groups of people. Bigots, racists, mysoginists, all sorts of '-phobes'... These are just adhominems, really and this is what makes people like Trump type of guys. Because it seems as though he's the only guy out there calling a spade a spade (which I think is just acting but then that's what politicians do anyway). Australia recently passed this "Thursday's changes to the Discrimination Act also added disability to the list, so it is now illegal to vilify someone because of disability, religion, race, sexuality, gender identity, and HIV/AIDS status. Vilification can include social media posts, actions in a workplace and wearing clothes, signs or flags that would incite hatred, contempt, ridicule or revulsion." Ridicule a ..[insert-the-name-of-one-of-the-new-50-or-so-genders-here]-sexual, perhaps not even for thei sexuality but for the hat they are wearing and be in violation?? Do we really need these kind of laws today? How much harm has been done by ridiculing any groups of people these days? An answer to a bad joke is to frown and call it distasteful, not to call it a crime! But thanks to PC spirit of today, nursing people's feelings is more important than free speech today and THAT is authoritarian. Tss tss don't you know that everyone in beautiful??? Exactly what I mean. ))) No, tough luck for everyone including me but beauty is temporary. Again, to cite Carlin: "And those valiant people who fight lookism (many of them unattractive themselves) tell us that one problem is that in our society, those who get to be called beautiful and those who are called ugly are determined by standards arbitrarily set by us. Somehow, there is some fault attached to the idea that we, the people, are the ones who set the standards of beauty. Well, we’re the ones who have to look at one another, so why shouldn’t we be the ones who set the standards?"
And yes, some people are into fatties, sure, but some people are also weirdly into amputees and I don't think that changes the reality that most people do not find too much fat attractive. They might have different tolerance levels but everyone understands it. Except in the spirit of crybabies and virtue-signalers of today there's now attempts at normalizing obesity. Because who are we to judge if a woman should have flobby cottage chees bags on her body or not, right? )))) This is all PC, spreading like cancer. Sign of society that doesn't seem to have any real problems to solve, like poverty or crime or corruption. Fight against all sorts of shaming. Can't take a bit of shaming - take a pill, go to a support group, grow a spine for f+ck's sake! Oh and 'Praise Abort' is great, I concur.) |

hehehehe cool vids, Rammstein really makes great clips oh geez these people with asses on both front and back! (might have to remove this line as shaming of a group of people if it is criminalized in Ukraine one day) |
|
16-09-2016 I have recently read that Rammstein got arested once, for fooling around with a dildo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqdIcg0aUW8) while on US tour, and are not allowed to do that in the US anymore. To me its pretty absurd that someone can go to jail for such a silly thing...But I am worried that such crappy laws are coming to Europe too. In many ways these sjws are even worse, but at least equally bigoted then their bible-belt-christian brothers. They could say for example that such a thing would 'propagate male dominance' or 'could hurt someones feelings' (..ohhh dat feeeeelings...) or some other bullshit they can up with..You know, here in Austria, I am not allowed not openly say something that may hurt someones religious feelings..as much as I would want make bad jokes about catholics and islam, unfortunately that's VERBOTEN! (with standing ovations from established left-winged parties) source: http://americanhumanist.org/system/storage/63/14/a/3436/2012_IRF_Report.pdf quote:
There where many more cases. People and publications get prosecuted all the time..And also comedians, cartoonist and so on must be very careful how they say and formulate things (many of the charlie hebdo cartoons would certainly be VERBOTEN if the would have been published in Austria). And the Green Party (left winged) tries to extend such laws by criminalizing insults (!) against woman, handicapped, gays, all sorts of-genders and sexually oriented...Ah as much as I am left-winged I am also a free-speech radical which has become a dilemma for me in recent years. And in many other EU-countries the situation isnt better. I think we need a 'new left', because with such retarded political enemies, the nationalists and neo-nazies are having an easy time.. Are sure that the Ukraine want's be part of such an Europe? But as much I can't make jokes about religions officially and publicly (too risky..you never know if someones feeeeeeelings get hurt,), I also know how to effectively anonymise myself if necessary on the internet (so they never will be able to track me down, and certainly not amateurish government officials and hillbilly cops). Off course many people learned, how they must formulate things and what words they can use and so on to get away with it. But that something like that this is necessary is indeed a shame. I think that they will continue to smuggle such crap into the laws under the pretense of 'hate speech' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech) loosening up the defnition of 'hate'. Ahh well people are just such children.... |

Ah as much as I am left-winged I am also a free-speech radical which has become a dilemma for me in recent years. And in many other EU-countries the situation isnt better. I think we need a 'new left', because with such retarded political enemies, the nationalists and neo-nazies are having an easy time.. Exactly. I come from the left too but for many resons am shifting more towards the right now. Not that US Christian right is the 'right' I would prefer either. I think the extreme left-right policies are dangerous in the long run and backlashes is what we should expect some day. So this over-the-top speech refining and diving into multiculturalism could result in some nasty shit. We don't get rid of our prejudices by just proclaiming them bigoted, they're still there and gag orders will only make the problem worse. If people have fears of the other and they're futhermore forbidden to express those and discuss that on social media, on tv without being called a hater or fined or locked up ... this might be a road to hate crimes involving actual violence. Hurtful hateful words are nasty, they can hurt feelings and sometimes - if they go unchallanged especially - they can win hearts and minds and spread the hate. We know that, so of course nobody's gonna argue that reading of the 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' or 'Mein Kampf' should be allowed on TV prime time unedited, uncommented, because 'free speach'. But that's about the extent to which I see it has to be limited. Peoples' bad ideas including bigoted views, prejudices have to be voiced and challenged, so they can be put to rest. Otherwise they keep on living, but only in closed groups where people reinforce one anothers beliefs and nobody's there to point to the flaws. Freud once said that the first man to hurl an insult rather than a spear was the founder of civilization.
I think it points to the fact that words have merit, even insults, this is how we deal with issues in a civilzed manner. Seal that channel for blowing off steam and buckle up...))) Are sure that the Ukraine want's be part of such an Europe? Nope. Not sure at all any more. Would rather not, actually. I just want European court system, and a lower level of corruption to settle here, that's all. But probably Ukraine never will so don't have to worry about that too much, lol. Those cases you cite are horrible. Instead of prompting religious people to grow up we're nursing them back to dark ages where their hurt feelings started wars and inquisitions. Europe is committing a 'rollback to an older driver version' like in Windows :D :D |

17-09-2016 The rise of Nazim in Germany was also to a great part due to the failure of left. Which they also admit (source: http://socialistreview.org.uk/378/lessons-of-defeat):"Unfortunately during the slump very few Communists were in employment. By 1932 mass victimisation meant that around nine out of ten KPD members were out of work. Lacking a connection with the organised working class many were disoriented. This left them prey to Stalin's position and encouraged them to turn their frustration against others on the left. The consequences were dire. However, the lesson of the Third Period disaster goes beyond the need for a united front against fascism. That menace was just one component of a larger picture. The call for a united front did not mean that everything else should be forgotten. That is why Trotsky did not suggest that the Communists gloss over the fact that SPD and KPD policies were "irreconcilably opposed". The key problem was that the KPD had lost its sense of perspective and priority, its sense of what was important at any given moment. Focusing its work on attacking another part of the left, it was ignoring the economic crisis, political turmoil, capitalist offensives, as well as Nazi manoeuvring." Yep, get out of touch with the reality of the people, don't address any real problems, don't fix anything real, and waste your time with trivialities and then be suprised when the fascists outrun you. I am not saying that most today's uprising populist far-right politicians are all Hitlers-in-the-making. Most seem to be just cheap populists without any real solutions either, though some seem to be more dangerous. And what are our left-winged politicians busy with? Suing people because of "Hate Speech": For example someone called an politician from the left-winged Green Party on Facebook a "miese Volksverräterin" (rotten traitor of the people) and a "korrupter Trampel" (corrupt plonker) - yes you have read right - that's hate speech. But ok, in this case the couldn't figure out who posted this. so they sued Facebook instead for allowing such unspeakable hatred! And that's what they are busy with: whining how all the racists and xenophobes a sooo mean to them on the internet! No surprise that the "Fight against hate speech" is their top priority...yes as you can see they got their priorities straight...so what can possibly be wrong. quote:
too but for many resons am shifting more towards the right now. Na ok, maybe I am not very far on the left either..you know extreme and radical political and economic ideas only look great and work out on paper..but just don't work out very well in reality (tss..that damn reality is always ruining my day..). Often you just have to find a reasonable middle-ground. quote:
Nope. Not sure at all any more. Would rather not, actually. I just want European court system, and a lower level of corruption to settle here, that's all. But probably Ukraine never will so don't have to worry about that too much, lol. I really hope that the Ukraine can find its way. Dependent on whom ask (and especially from what region they are from) everything is either to blame on 'western imperialists' or the 'russian oppressors' - never themselves - they are always victims. So I would suggest that they should throw away that vicitim-mentality, be more pragmatical and less ideological. Sure, also due it's geographical location, the west has its interests, and of course the russians are very paranoid abouts its military interests too. And to associate with one side, will piss off the other side (there's just no way around that). That's just how it is - you don't have to like it - but whining and bitching around about it wont change it. You can be well off without taking any side. So, ukraine, be pragmatical, clever, and play your cards well - try to take advantage of it. But ok, I am not overly optimist when it comes to your current government, as they don't seem to be such 'political geniuses' neither, as the current situation would require it. And yes true, Putin is practically an machiavellian autocrat, but he is also very clever and politically experienced And it needs very clever politicians (and not ones with ideological agendas) that are able to keep up with him. |

I've heard the view that Nazis won hearts and minds because Germans were feeling defeated and humiliated after the 1st WW, and that feeling of inadequacy is a fertile ground for supremacist views as compensation. I'm sure there were many factors in placse that came together though. Something similar is with Russia today where the longing for the lost SU and the Russian Empire creates a vacuum today, that hyped obsession with WW2 victory as something to be proud of is such a stretch when the defeated Germany is in so much better state than the winner SU (including Russia). 'We won, but our living standards are shit compared to those who lost the war'. It's kind of shameful. So this expansionist course that Putin took is well received by the people who see no other achievements of their once great (or perceived so) country. If you ask Russians who is to blame for their problems you'll also hear 'Obama', not the corruption or the oligarchy, not their own passivity and fear. They've brought back Stalin's cult several years ago, how could that be possible?? http://uriupina.com/current-events-society/hail-stalin-propaganda-brainless THAT's where hate speech laws and censorship could maybe be implemented a bit, right? ))) So there's some scary shit going on in the minds of our neighbors and I don't think Putin is such a clever guy, he's just charismatic and he has the guts of the street thug, which rest of the politicians lack, they're too civillized for that, maybe. This guy gets it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BT4sK36cU3Y I too think victim mentality is what holds people back. No matter what happened in past the road ahead must be with reliance on ourselves first. Our corruption tolerance is killing us faster than all external enemies. Plus, we have enough of internal ones who secretely wish this country seized to exist. So far I don't see a way out, it's so frustrating, taking all these IMF loans when we could be loaning IMF money if we put an end to the gargantuan stealing in the high-ups. But they're all so interconnected and must each have dirt on one another... "For instance, the ex-deputy head of the regional SBU, who is also the son-in-law of a former deputy governor, is suspected by authorities of overseeing a scheme some critics believe earned up to $75,000 a day, according to local media." http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/07/ukraine-amber-mafia-160704101214561.html And that's just a bit of what is being lost, there's forest, then there's all sorts of 'schemes' that suck out ridiculous amounts of money from the budget. Ukraine is a very rich country with cancer that is corruption. Lots of people are now empoverished, and that means vulnerable to populist promises yet again. Btw, government rose household bills several times very suddenly and put 2/3 of the population on subsidies, which aren't actually paid to people, they just go straight to the dudes who own respective services companies. Hard to say where that's going to lead. Doesn't seem like a very bright idea. People are already opting to hide their real earnings so they could be eligible for household welfare. But this is still not the worst problem, the overregulation and beaurocracy is. That is how government makes money off of businesses and keeps middle or aspiring middle class in check. Local enthusiasts were trying to make real wine following the proper ways and they get their assets seized and business stopped for working without 2 million worth licence. Licence for what? Let people create and sell, check for quality and safety and fuck off, but no, even today, our government continues being a parasite on the people and the enemy of this country's economic growth. Ugh... I better get back tp work, enough ranting. |
Comments to Pessimism, depression and meaning
